This year, the Advocacy Center is focusing on the ways domestic violence hurts children. One in fifteen children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence.
Outreach to Pediatrician Offices/Child Development Organizations
Dozens of pediatrician offices, childcare businesses, preschools, and school districts throughout Tompkins County will receive posters and informational packets about the connection between domestic violence and children.
Community Conversations: Big Little Lies
Domestic violence – and the significant impact it has on children – was portrayed in one of the storylines in the book by Liane Moriarty which is now an HBO series Big Little Lies. Join the Advocacy Center for facilitated Community Conversations about the complex themes about domestic violence including power and control, and the striking discrepancy between public perception and private experience.

Clothesline Project Displays
This display of survivor-created t-shirts allows survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to “air their dirty laundry.” The t-shirts, which contain powerful stories, images, and artwork, are hung on a clothesline to show that the people who experience domestic, sexual, or emotional violence aren’t just statistics but people in our communities and neighborhoods. Red Flag Campaign Display
Tompkins Cortland Community College will be displaying the Red Flag Campaign from October 28th through October 30th. This awareness campaign seeks to highlight the red flags of relationship abuse at colleges and universities.
Shine the Light on Domestic Violence Day – Go Purple! October 24th – All Day
Grab your favorite purple scarf, pants, shirt, hat, skirt – anything really! – and join others around NYS in going purple to raise awareness and show support for survivors of domestic violence. Please share a picture on social media using hashtag #GoPurpleTompkins and be sure to tag us @advocacytc.

Ithaca College’s fountain will be turning purple to recognize Shine the Light on Domestic Violence Day.
Cornell Shines a Light on Domestic Violence: For the third year in a row, there will be numerous information tables set up throughout Cornell’s campus to share resources and information about howt o recognize and respond to domestic violence.
High schools throughout Tompkins County will be going purple!
Sophie Fund Cupcake Contest — This contest raises funds for The Sophie Fund’s important suicide prevention work. We are grateful to The Sophie Fund for donating the proceeds of their button sales at this event to our agency. https://thesophiefund.org/cupcake-contest/
Wizarding Weekend — October 26th & 27th, 10am-5pm, Downtown Ithaca
Wizards, Witches, and Magically-Impaired Folk (MIFs) alike are invited to visit us during Wizarding Weekend to find out how to join the Wizarding Army or the Magical Safekeeper Society. Donate a pair of new socks for someone fleeing abuse in our domestic violence shelter and free a house elves as well!

Enough Abuse Workshop — Behaviors of Adults Who Sexually Abuse Children. Hosted by the TC Coalition for Families, 10/17 from 8:30-10:30am at Cornell Cooperative Extension. This workshop teaches adults how to recognize the warning signs in both abused children and offending adults, as well as youth with problematic sexual behaviors. Additionally participants will learn about grooming, best practices on how to handle disclosures, and about existing local resources in the community.
Identifying and Supporting Survivors of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children
(CSEC) and Youth Sex Trafficking — 10/31: A free half-day training recommended for youth serving professionals, educators, social workers, law enforcement, and concerned citizens.
