October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), and to recognize and support those impacted by domestic violence, our agency will be providing educational resources and hosting several different events for students and community members across Tompkins County. Below is a list of different ways you can engage in DVAM with us!

Ithaca College Runs Purple 5K – October 18

Ithaca College is back with their annual 5k to support those impacted by domestic violence. The 5k will take place on October 18, 2025 with check-in starting at 8:30am and the run/walk beginning at 9:00am. The starting location for the 5k will be at the Kostrinsky Field (the softball field by Terrace 13 parking lot) at Ithaca College. The registration link can be found here.

There is no registration fee for this event; however, a suggested donation of $20.00 is listed on the registration form.

Go the Extra Mile (…or Km)

This year, the issue area that fundraised income will go towards is our 24/7 hotline program. Our ability to be an available resource 24/7 through our hotline is not easy, and would not be possible without the hard work of our hotline volunteers and advocates who staff each shift. Our hotline is a critical resource to ensure all people who need our services can access them whenever they need and in a safe manner. We are encouraging people to pledge to a donation amount that represents important numbers or percentages tied to our hotline services. See below for more information to decide what your donation can represent:

Choose Your Pledge:

  • $24: Our hotline would not function without our hotline volunteers, who answer many calls on the hotline each year. In fact, each of our hotline volunteers signs up for (at least!) 24 hours of shifts each month. Pledge to donate $24 to acknowledge all of the time that our volunteers commit to the hotline, to help our community!
  • $44: In 2024, we received a total of 2291 calls, meaning that each week in the year, we received about 44 calls. By donating $44, you can support each individual who may call our hotline each week.
  • $81: Of the 818 calls we received in the first half of this year, 485 of these involved domestic violence. Looking at this in a month’s view, approximately 81 calls to our hotline each month relate to domestic violence. By raising $81 in Domestic Violence Awareness Month, your donation can support the people who reach out to our hotline for help regarding domestic violence.
  • $100: Our goal as an agency is to work towards a goal where no one experiences any form of domestic or sexual violence. ‘Go the extra mile’ and donate $100 to signify a world where 100% of people are safe from interpersonal violence.

Purple Thursday – October 16

Purple Thursday is a day that anyone can participate in, and it is as easy as the name suggests! Wear purple on October 16 to support those who have been affected by domestic violence. While the act is simple in nature, our collective display of support can show survivors that they are not alone.

Annual Meeting – October 27

The Advocacy Center’s Annual Meeting will be held from 5:30pm-7:00pm on October 27 at the Kitchen Theatre Company. We look forward to celebrating successes and acknowledging challenges faced by our organization this year with the community.
